Join us for an amazing panel discussing and book signing event to celebrate the release of THIS IS AMERICA: The Unsettling Contradictions in American Identity. This is the official catalog for Genevieve Gaignard’s 2022 exhibition at Atlanta Contemporary, curated by Karen Comer Lowe. This thought-provoking book explores the multifaceted identity of America, past and present, through the powerful lens of Gaignard’s art.
This event is an exceptional opportunity to hear from the key contributors of This Is America and to delve into the themes of American identity, history, and culture explored in both the exhibition and the book. The panel discussion will be moderated by Lauren Jackson Harris of Black Women and Visual Art, adding an insightful dimension to the conversation.
The panel will feature:
Genevieve Gaignard - The visionary artist behind the exhibition, whose work explores complex themes of race, gender, and class.
Jewels Dodson - A distinguished contributor whose essay adds depth to the narrative of the exhibition.
Dr. Cheryl Finley - An acclaimed art historian and author, whose scholarship enriches the book’s exploration of African American culture.
Karen Comer Lowe - Curator and organizer of the book, bringing her extensive experience and insight to the discussion.
Following the panel, there will be a book signing where attendees can purchase This Is America and have their copies signed by the panelists. The book, a limited-edition publication with only 250 copies available, is an essential addition to the collection of anyone interested in contemporary art and American culture.
Special thank you to our event partner Atlanta Contemporary for providing a safe space for enriching and neccessary dialogue.
