A message from the Founders

We are here.

Black Women in Visual Art is three years old, but Black women have been working in visual art for decades. The BWVA mission is to promote and celebrate the contributions of Black women impacting the art world past, present and future. Being the change we want to see is how BWVA emerged from idea to reality. It is an organization we would want to be part of; a community that nurtures the growth of Black women arts workers by providing  opportunities, resources and insights for thriving careers.

Additionally BWVA is a consultancy. We assist in fostering diversity in creative spaces and serve as creative partners for any organization seeking to build equity in the arts.

BWVA launched as a leap of faith, our journey has been both challenging and rewarding. Our rapid growth has come with many lessons but also a tremendous sense of gratitude for where we have come and where we are going.

As we continue to evolve look for updates to our journal that will be organized as a forum for ideas and a community exchange.

Our current programs, ‘She Is A’ and ‘Her Eye’ will progress, along with fresh content to explore notable art industry issues. On the horizon are additional programs developed to get you hired. With the launch of our curator in residence and fellowship initiatives we want to place qualified candidates in art spaces with our partners.

BWVA is here, and we are humbled by the buzz in discovering that our organization has IRL fans and supporters. Thank you and stand by for more!
